Rosa Russell

Rosa Lee Russell was born in ­­­­­Warrenton, North Carolina on January 29, 1939, to the parentage of John Russell Sr. and Caroline Edwards-Russell. Peacefully on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, after a long and courageous fight, God dispatched his angels to the Calvary Hospital in Bronx, New York where they picked a beautiful Rose and dedicated worshiper to bring to her eternal home, where she rejoined her parents, and two (2) brothers John and Henry Russell.

At an early age, Rosa confessed Christ as her personal savior joining the Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ in Manson, NC. Rosa was educated at the Warren County High School in Wise, North Carolina, graduating in 1956.

In 1956, Rosa moved to Newark, New Jersey to seek better employment opportunities. Rosa worked at the S. Klein Department Store until she proudly obtained employment at the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City, until she retired in 1995.

Rosa continued her walk with Christ in New York by attending the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, New York until the church disbanded. Rosa then attended the White Rock Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, New York until the COVID-19 pandemic. Rosa remained a dutiful worshiper dedicating hours of daily devotion to Christ.

Rosa was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, great aunt, and great-great aunt. Prior to becoming ill, Rosa expressed her love for family and friends by mailing birthday and Christmas blessing to each of them.

Rosa’s guilty pleasures included watching Western movies and going to the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut with her friend Helen Perry.

Kind, beautiful, loyal, a woman of integrity, generous, compassionate, family oriented, a great friend, a great listener, and Auntie Mom, are words that will forever remain in the hearts of those Rosa leaves behind. Rosa is survived by sisters Dorothelia Thomas of Delaware; Lula Mae Hargrove of Flushing, New York; Elizabeth Franks of South Ozone Park, New York; Rebecca Perry of Warrenton, NC; Earnestine Russell-Durham of Oxon Hill, Maryland; and Savannah Burnett of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; friends Francena Gathers of Mount Vernon, NY; Helen Perry, Mt. Vernon, NY; and Alice Borgan of Bronx, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of White Rock Baptist Church, 270 South 5th Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York, 10550.
