Ethel McNeil Chapman, daughter of the late Marie McNeil Riddick and Hester McNeil was born on March 22, 1931, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She departed this earthly life on December 28, 2023.
Ethel was educated at Lucille Hunter Elementary School and Washington High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was employed at Saint Augustine College, Perry Electronics and ITT. She later tested her skills as an entrepreneur and ran a very successful business called Mom’s Country Kitchen on New Bern Ave in Raleigh.
Ethel joined Saint Matthew African Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of 10 where she was a devoted member for many years, singing in the choir, helping in the kitchen, serving as the President of the youth Usher Board, Women’s Missionary Society, a member of the Trustee Board and later proudly serving alongside her fellow Golden Circle members.
In her own words, she would like to be remembered most of all as a God loving person who was always willing to help or find a way as long as she was able.
Ethel was a caring matriarch of her family and was preceded in death by her children William Thomas, Larry, William Earl, and Betty.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters Earline Hemby (Stewart) and Helen Chapman; three sons, Iven Chapman, Terry Chapman (Maria), and William Lee Dunn; a granddaughter that she raised, Shanaa Chapman; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and many special friends that have become family.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted in the sanctuary of St. Matthew AME Church in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday, January 6, 2024 beginning at 10:00 a.m. with family visitation and service at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Marian Robinson, Pastor will officiate and interment will follow in the Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh, North Carolina.
