Alvis Burnett, Jr. Obituary

Alvis Burnett, Jr., 52, a resident of Warrenton, Virginia, entered eternal rest on the afternoon of August 17, 2019.  Alvis was born on July 23, 1967, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Alvis Burnett, Sr. and Olivia Russell Burnett.  Alvis’ devotion to his family and firm belief in God gives his family comfort during this extremely difficult time.

Alvis’ parents immersed him in the Christian faith which became his lifelong support from a very early age. He was baptized on August 20, 1978 at Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Norlina, North Carolina.  He and his family made Oak Shade Baptist Church, Catlett, VA, their church home in 2005.  The family cherishes their strong bond with their Pastor, Reverend Jesse Jones, Jr. and the family and friends of Oak Shade Baptist Church.

Alvis was blessed with a large and loving family. He married his best friend, Ailsa Ware Burnett, on June 12, 2004 in Culpeper, VA.  Alvis raised his three children with patience, discipline and humility. He taught them valuable life lessons.  He often took them on family trips which has created lasting memories.  Alvis coached their sport teams and taught them the importance of teamwork, hard work, and being dedicated to every initiative.  From the very beginning, he dedicated his children to the church and encouraged them to develop their own relationships with God.

Alvis lived the same values he taught his children.  He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina.  He spent four years serving his country in the United States Army.  He was honorably discharged and claimed his designation as a US Army Veteran in 1992.  Alvis spent the last 14 years working for Travelers Insurance company as a Senior Property Claims Adjuster.  His accomplishments are a testament to his hard work and dedication.

If you knew Alvis, you knew he loved Harley Davidson motorcycles.  He and his motorcycle family rode for miles and hours across the United States.  Riding his motorcycle was one of Alvis’ greatest past times.  The sound of him starting his bike will be greatly missed.  Alvis was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan and he loved his team throughout their good and bad seasons.  He was beyond excited when his beloved team won the Super Bowl in 2018.  Many of us received calls and text from Alvis bragging about this monumental victory! Lastly, Alvis had a strong admiration for his home state of North Carolina.  He would often travel there, sometimes on his Harley, to spend time with his family and long-time friends.  His family is honoring Alvis’ wishes and laying him to rest in his cherished state of North Carolina, at the church where he was baptized.

Alvis was a kind person who had a heart of gold.  He always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how small. Alvis was a devoted husband and father and he loved spending time with his family and serving as chair of the Burnett family reunion committees. His infectious smile and contagious laugh were the center of every room he entered.   Alvis never met a stranger which has been evident in the outpouring of love and support from people near and far.  Alvis impacted many lives and he was respected by his peers, family, and friends.  He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his creator.

Alvis is survived by his wife, Ailsa; his sons: Joseph and Howard; his daughter Jada; and his mother and father, Alvis, Sr. and Oliva Burnett.  Alvis had one loving and devoted sister, Jaqueline Harley (Tyler).  He is also survived by his father and mother in-law, Howard and Marlene Ware; and a sister in-law, Jennifer LaMothe (Edward).   There are a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will also cherish their memories with Alvis.

Family will receive friends on Monday, August 26, 2019, from 10 am until 11 am with funeral services starting at 11 am at Oak Shade Baptist Church, 3287 Old Catlett Road, Catlett, Virginia, 20119.  Rev. Jesse Jones Jr. will deliver the eulogy.  The repast will immediately follow the services in the church’s fellowship hall.

Interment with military honors will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2019, 1 PM, at Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, 173 Kerr Lake Cole Bridge Road, Norlina, North Carolina 27563. Pastor Maggie Stinnet will officiate the interment service.
